Overview
CoQ10 plays a critical role in the electron transport chain, making it essential for ATP production. While it is commonly associated with cardiovascular health, it also supports cognitive performance by improving brain energy metabolism. Its benefits are more pronounced in individuals experiencing fatigue or age-related decline. It is typically used as a long-term support compound rather than for acute effects.
The evidence
CoQ10 is essential to mitochondrial energy production and is a popular antioxidant supplement, but its direct cognitive evidence is weak. Trials in neurodegenerative diseases (Parkinson's, Huntington's) have been largely equivocal, and dedicated cognition trials in healthy older adults are few. KÖGN grades it on its established biochemical role and safety rather than on demonstrated cognitive gains.
How to dose it
Commonly supplemented at 100–300 mg/day, taken with a fat-containing meal for absorption; the reduced 'ubiquinol' form is often used at the lower end.

Chronic.
Safety & side effects
Well tolerated; occasional mild GI upset or insomnia. A strong safety record across trials.
Who should avoid it
CoQ10 may reduce the effect of warfarin, so tell your clinician if you take anticoagulants. Otherwise low-risk; safety in pregnancy is not well studied.
