Primary effects

  • Increased energy
  • Improved endurance
  • Reduced fatigue

How it works

Improves oxygen utilisation and cellular energy production, supporting mental and physical performance.

Overview

Cordyceps is traditionally used to enhance stamina and vitality, with effects that extend to mental energy and resilience. While it is more commonly associated with physical performance, its ability to improve oxygen efficiency and reduce fatigue can support sustained cognitive output. Effects tend to build gradually, making it more suitable for consistent use.

The evidence

Cordyceps is a medicinal mushroom traditionally used for energy and stamina. Most research targets exercise performance and fatigue rather than cognition, and even there the controlled trials are mixed — some show improved high-intensity exercise tolerance, others no benefit to endurance. Direct cognitive evidence in humans is minimal; any mental benefit is an indirect, energy-and-fatigue story.

How to dose it

Exercise studies commonly use 1–3 g/day of a characterised extract (e.g. CS-4 or Cordyceps militaris), taken for several weeks.

When to take it

Chronic.

Safety & side effects

Generally well tolerated; occasional mild GI upset. Product identity and potency vary widely between brands.

Who should avoid it

Take care, and ask a clinician, if you are on anticoagulants, immunosuppressants, or diabetes medication. Choose tested products, as the mushroom species and quality vary. Not well studied in pregnancy.
