Overview
Forskolin is more commonly associated with metabolic and fat-loss applications, but its ability to increase cAMP has implications for memory and learning pathways. However, direct evidence for cognitive enhancement in humans is limited. It is typically considered a secondary compound with indirect benefits rather than a primary nootropic.
The evidence
Forskolin, from the plant Coleus forskohlii, raises the cellular messenger cAMP, and is sold mostly for weight and metabolic goals rather than cognition. Its memory-related evidence is preclinical (cAMP signalling supports memory formation in lab models); controlled human cognition trials are lacking, so any nootropic use is theoretical.
Safety & side effects
In its supplement uses it can lower blood pressure and has mild blood-thinning effects; flushing and a faster heartbeat are reported.
Who should avoid it
Avoid, or seek medical advice, if you take blood-pressure or anticoagulant medication, before surgery, or if you have a bleeding disorder. Not for use in pregnancy. The cognitive evidence is preclinical, so expectations should be low.
