Bacopa Monnieri has extensive clinical research supporting its effects on memory and learning, particularly with consistent use over 4–8 weeks. It also exhibits mild anxiolytic properties, making it useful for reducing cognitive interference caused by stress. It is not a fast-acting nootropic, but rather a long-term cognitive enhancer that supports neural adaptation and memory retention.
The evidence
Multiple controlled trials support improvements in memory acquisition and retention with chronic supplementation. Notably, it does little on a same-day basis — the effect is a slow build.
Dose
300 mg/day of an extract standardised to ~50% bacosides (or equivalent).
Timing
Chronic — meaningful effects typically appear after 8–12 weeks of daily use. Often taken with food.
Safety
Generally well tolerated; the most common complaint is gastrointestinal upset, reduced by taking with a meal.
